Stories are Portals of Possibility

Pre-P.S. You're reading day 16 of my 32 days of insights, inspiration, and instigation. (Very informal title). Get the full scoop here. โœจ

I hate reality TV. Give me a drama like Bridgerton over The Real Housewives anyday.

Getting lost in story is more addicting than chocolate.

Stories let us try on new realities and reactions. They're magic for helping us get out of our heads so we can see more possibilities.

When we can observe rather than be in the middle of it all, we can better discern how we might want to act in similar situations.

So today, I'm doing something different. ๐Ÿ’ƒ

I'm popping into your inbox with three small vignettes for life.

I wrote the first one a few months ago for me when I was saying "yes" when I meant "no" far too often.

Writing and reading short snippets like this helps me visualize how situations can go differently.

I wrote the other two today while playing with characters for the fiction book I'm writing. (More on that later).

On saying no:

She paused for a moment allowing the request to permeate her body.

"I'm not willing to do that right now. Thanks for asking."

Turning to walk away, she knew there was no point looking back. Peace flowed through her veins, fueling her next steps.

On feeling:

He paced back and forth, the cool floor underneath him heating up with every step. Sleep had become as absent from his life as his friend Johnny who only seemed to call during an emergency.

With everything going on, the length of his stride felt like the only thing he could control.

Risking the rising tide of emotion, he decided to sit.

Breath started to replace each step. Short gasps became long draws.

And then it came, all the emotion he had feared came barreling up to the surface--anger, sadness, and bewilderment--rode in like a wave.

Too tired to try and fight it, he took a breath and allowed it to wash over him.

Ten minutes later, he emerged in one piece, suddenly feeling the pull of sleep

On making an ask:

Just like that, the ask rolled off her tongue.

"Will you please be home at 6:00 tonight? I miss dinners with you."

She noticed a look of shock dart across his face. Instead of looking down and bracing for the rejection she so feared, she held her soft gaze.

"Of course. Thanks for asking."

And just like that, she felt a little bit taller. Maybe her needs could be met after all.

Hot tip: About to experience something new or out of your comfort zone? Write yourself a vignette for how you want it to go.

xx,
Alyssa

Hey Reader, I feel a little bit nervous as I let my fingertips brush over my pink keyboard for the first time in what feels like eternity. Anyone who teaches about "building an email list" will tell you A) not to ghost your list for 7 months and B) certainly not to announce you have ghosted them for 7 months upon return. Now that I've done both of those things we can get back to the meat of this email. First, hi. If you're opening this to either 1). remember who the hell I am or 2). because...

Planes, presence, and freshly squeezed orange juice Pre-P.S. You're reading day 25 of my 32 days of insights, inspiration, and instigation. (Very informal title). Get the full scoop here. โœจ We made it to Chicago yesterday! After 16 hours of travel, one better-than-usual but still not great airplane meal, three episodes of The Witch Trials of J.K. Rowling, two episodes of Queen Charlotte, 1 hour waiting for our bags, and 45 minutes in a taxi, we stepped foot into our swanky hotel overlooking...

Screw the swear jar; pay someone a quarter every time you say this instead Pre-P.S. You're reading day 22 of my 32 days of insights, inspiration, and instigation. (Very informal title). Get the full scoop here. โœจ I've decided to avoid learning "should" in Spanish. Our house has no swear jar (it'd be full real fast). Instead of policing swear words, we've banned the word "should" from our conversations. So there's really no point in me learning it in Spanish. Should is a far more damaging word...
