Doing What Matters Most

Pre-P.S. You're reading day 19 of my 32 days of insights, inspiration, and instigation. (Very informal title). Get the full scoop here. โœจ

Some people have the magical ability to wake up at the same time every morning and operate methodically.

They wake up, shower, put on the coffee, grab the day's outfit, snag the now-ready coffee, do hair/makeup, sit at the desk, and immediately start working on the most important task.

I am not one of those people.

If you're one of those people, you'd likely get along with my soon-to-be husband, and I admire you.

Aside from waking up between 7:00 am-8:00 am every day (#noalarmclocklife), my days start far less predictably.

Sometimes I love this about myself; sometimes, I hate it.

The creative part of me really hates it because the morning hours are liquid gold for my creativity.

If I don't prioritize creativity first, I hear about it, mainly in the form of bad sleep.

Creativity has a way of demanding attention if you ignore it. Just when you're thinking about winding down for bed, you'll get a nudge that suddenly pings you awake. Ignore it, and you're destined for a night of tossing and turning.

And even though I know this, I don't always cash in on those morning hours.

Life gets in the way when we don't proactively stop to say, "I want it that way."

It takes conscious effort to prioritize what's most important to us. There are thousands of things vying for our attention daily, discerning which is the most important to us is the best present we can give ourselves each morning.

Being rigid in our expectations rarely benefits us, but daring to know what we want and then being flexible leads to a life of co-creation with the universe.

So that even if the contractors come in with the wrong paint color, and your wall socket gets ripped out and you have to repair the wall, and your almost-husband wants you to pick out a laundry basket that'll fit in your weirdly shaped room so your clothes can stop littering the floor, at least you identified what you wanted out of the day, so you can return to what's most important with less energetic effort.

Knowing what you want is a superpower.

When you know what you want, you can ask for what you want, and that makes life much easier than expecting everyone around you to guess what you need daily.

xx,
Alyssa

P.S. I Want it That Way by the Backstreet Boys is now going to be stuck in my head for the rest of the day.

This line was the culprit: "Life gets in the way when we don't proactively stop to say, 'I want it that way.'"

Hey Reader, I feel a little bit nervous as I let my fingertips brush over my pink keyboard for the first time in what feels like eternity. Anyone who teaches about "building an email list" will tell you A) not to ghost your list for 7 months and B) certainly not to announce you have ghosted them for 7 months upon return. Now that I've done both of those things we can get back to the meat of this email. First, hi. If you're opening this to either 1). remember who the hell I am or 2). because...

Planes, presence, and freshly squeezed orange juice Pre-P.S. You're reading day 25 of my 32 days of insights, inspiration, and instigation. (Very informal title). Get the full scoop here. โœจ We made it to Chicago yesterday! After 16 hours of travel, one better-than-usual but still not great airplane meal, three episodes of The Witch Trials of J.K. Rowling, two episodes of Queen Charlotte, 1 hour waiting for our bags, and 45 minutes in a taxi, we stepped foot into our swanky hotel overlooking...

Screw the swear jar; pay someone a quarter every time you say this instead Pre-P.S. You're reading day 22 of my 32 days of insights, inspiration, and instigation. (Very informal title). Get the full scoop here. โœจ I've decided to avoid learning "should" in Spanish. Our house has no swear jar (it'd be full real fast). Instead of policing swear words, we've banned the word "should" from our conversations. So there's really no point in me learning it in Spanish. Should is a far more damaging word...
